Police have discovered arms and ammunition in north Afghanistan’s Sari Pul province, provincial police spokesman Deen Mohammad Nazari said Monday.
The official said that weapons including an AKM, a mortar and an 82 mm caliber gun, and ammunition kept illegally, were discovered in Balkhab and Sangcharak districts during search operations recently.
Police had taken two people into custody for keeping the weapons illegally, but set them free on surety, the official said.
The Afghan caretaker government has discovered and seized thousands of light and heavy weapons including battle tanks since its taking over power in August 2021. It has vowed to collect arms and ammunition from anyone living outside security organs.
