Taiwan’s Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) led a delegation to visit Japan on Sunday, hoping to boost trade, cultural, and parliamentary ties during a five-day trip, sources familiar with the matter said.

On the invitation of the Asia Taiwanese Chambers Of Commerce, the delegation will attend its 30th anniversary celebrations in Tokyo and meet with local Taiwanese businessmen, sources said.

You will also seek support from the group to push Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which if successful would help introduce Taiwan-made products to the world, according to sources.

In addition, the visit aims to promote meaningful exchanges between parliamentarians from both countries and strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, Indo-Pacific security, innovative technology, culture, and tourism.

The delegation will also visit Hagi City in southern Honshu, where Japan’s Meiji Restoration emerged around the 1860s, sources said.

The delegation intends to learn more about how the movement restored practical abilities and consolidated the political system under the Emperor of Japan in the historic city, which is also the hometown of late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, sources said.
