Japan to Ease Land-Use Restrictions to Support Key Sectors

The Japanese government is planning to ease restrictions on the use of land to support production of items considered important for economic security.

The government has been strengthening domestic production capability of items such as semiconductors and storage batteries to ensure their stable supply.

Sources say the central government will encourage local authorities to permit construction of factories for those products even in so-called urbanization control areas where development is regulated.

It is also considering streamlining procedures for converting farmland to industrial use. They normally take about one year, but the government aims to shorten that to about four months.

The plan is expected to form part of the government’s new economic support package that is due to be compiled by the end of this month.
