Indonesian Student Found Dead in East Japan Apartment

An Indonesian woman studying in Japan has been found dead inside an apartment in this east Japan city, police said.

Investigators found the body of the 23-year-old student, Josi Putri Cahayani, at around 4:40 p.m. on Aug. 22 in a two-story apartment in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture. There were no notable external injuries on her body, but due to its decomposition an autopsy could not determine the cause of her death, according to Gunma Prefectural Police’s first investigation division and other sources.

Police are searching for her male Japanese acquaintance who had rented the apartment and has been out of touch, and are investigating the case with a view to the possibility that the student was caught up in a crime.

According to the first criminal investigation division, the Indonesian student came to Japan in April and was studying at a language school in Maebashi. She had shared a room with a fellow Indonesian woman attending the same school. In mid-August, the 23-year-old went out saying, “I’m off to hang out,” but her roommate had since apparently lost touch with her.

Upon receiving a report from her roommate, school officials consulted the prefectural police on Aug. 21. When investigators were searching locations connected to the missing student, they found her body inside the apartment, located in a residential area about 500 meters east of JR Maebashi Station.
